Choose an Essay Type

01Opinion (Agree / Disagree)

You are given a statement and asked to what extent you agree or disagree. You must take a clear position and defend it throughout the essay.

e.g. “To what extent do you agree or disagree?”

02Discussion (Both Views + Opinion)

You must present BOTH sides of an argument fairly, then give your own opinion. Both views must be developed equally.

e.g. “Discuss both views and give your own opinion.”

03Advantages & Disadvantages

You must explore both the benefits and drawbacks of something. Sometimes you are also asked whether one outweighs the other.

e.g. “What are the advantages and disadvantages of...?”

04Problem / Solution

Also called Causes & Solutions. You identify problems (or causes) related to an issue and then suggest realistic, well-explained solutions.

e.g. “What are the problems caused by...? What solutions can be suggested?”

05Two-Part / Direct Question

The question contains two separate direct questions. Both must be answered fully and equally — neglecting either one will significantly reduce your score.

e.g. “Why is this happening? What can be done about it?”
