IELTS Band 7 Writing: Exactly What Examiners Look For

Band 7IELTS Writingband descriptorsexaminer criteria

IELTS Band 7 is the most sought-after Writing score — required for most UK university master's programmes, Australian skilled migration, and Canadian Express Entry. Many candidates hover at Band 6–6.5 for multiple test attempts without understanding the precise differences. This guide breaks down the Band 7 descriptor for each of the four Writing criteria with concrete examples of what examiners expect.

1Task Achievement/Task Response — Band 7

Task Achievement (Task 1) Band 7 descriptor: 'Covers the requirements of the task; presents, highlights and illustrates key features/bullet points but could be more fully extended.' What this means: you must present a clear overview, identify and compare the main features (not all features), and use data accurately. The gap between Band 6 and Band 7 in Task Achievement is typically the quality of the overview (Band 6: vague or missing; Band 7: clear and data-free) and the grouping of data (Band 6: sequential listing; Band 7: logical comparisons). Task Response (Task 2) Band 7: 'Presents, extends and supports main ideas, but there may be a tendency to over-generalise and/or supporting ideas may lack focus.' This means you address all parts of the question, take a clear position, and develop 2 main ideas with evidence.

2Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7

Band 7 descriptor: 'Logically organises information and ideas; there is clear progression throughout; uses a range of cohesive devices appropriately although there may be some under-/over-use.' What this means in practice: Your essay has a clear 4-paragraph structure for Task 2 (introduction, 2 body paragraphs, conclusion). Each paragraph develops one idea. Paragraphs are connected by appropriate transition language. Within paragraphs, ideas follow each other logically. You use a variety of cohesive devices: linking adverbs ('furthermore', 'however'), reference words ('this', 'these measures'), and lexical chains (synonyms for key concepts). The Band 6 vs Band 7 gap: Band 6 typically over-uses one linking word ('however' at the start of every other sentence). Band 7 rotates through multiple device types.

3Lexical Resource — Band 7

Band 7 descriptor: 'Uses sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision; uses less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation; may produce occasional errors in word choice, spelling, and/or word formation.' What this means: you routinely use words beyond basic vocabulary — 'exacerbate', 'mitigate', 'disparity', 'foster'. Your collocations are generally correct ('raise awareness', not 'increase awareness'). You rarely repeat the same key words multiple times. Occasional errors are present but do not impede communication. The Band 6 vs Band 7 gap: Band 6 uses simple vocabulary consistently, or uses sophisticated words with incorrect collocations. Band 7 uses a range of vocabulary precisely and naturally.

4Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7

Band 7 descriptor: 'Uses a variety of complex structures; produces frequent error-free sentences; has good control of grammar and punctuation but may make a few errors.' What this means: your essay regularly features complex sentences (subordinate clauses with 'although', 'while', 'since'), relative clauses ('which has led to…', 'that governments should consider…'), passive constructions, and conditional sentences ('If this approach were adopted…'). Most sentences are correct. Errors, when they occur, do not impede meaning. The Band 6 vs Band 7 gap: Band 6 relies mostly on simple and compound sentences with occasional complex structures. Band 7 uses complex structures as the default with consistent accuracy.

🎯 Key Takeaway

Reaching Band 7 is systematic: identify your weakest criterion among the four, target it specifically for two weeks, then verify improvement through practice tests. Most candidates are closest to Band 7 on Coherence and farthest on Lexical Resource. Begin with your weakest criterion.
